The importance of exercise for diabetes management
What the research tells us
- A supervised structured exercise and diet program delivered over a minimum of 8 weeks elicits a reduction in HbA1 levels, weight and improves control of blood glucose levels.
- 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise per week, resistance training conducted on non-consecutive days 3 x per week and diet modification significantly reduces blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetics over a 12 week period
- Strength training improves the body’s ability to use insulin and process glucose as energy, in turn lowering blood glucose levels, reducing the risk of diabetes related complications
- Heart disease, blood pressure and cholesterol risk significantly reduces with a supervised, structured exercise plan over the period of 12 weeks.
